Final for my Hiroshi Project. I’ve uploaded the figure as nature pieces individually and together as a set.
Getting Physical
I’ve began work on my set. Things are going very well so far. Lighting works to my advantage, giving the different cutouts slightly altered tonal ranges. I feel the colors go together well, given that I am using mostly found material.
I still need to figure out how exactly I am going to be able to press the figure through the screen. I won’t be able to move the set at all without things falling apart. I am considering having someone stand behind and press though, experimenting with that aspect will begin tomorrow.
I am pulling to have a set of 4 photos: Daylight, Dusk, Nightlight, Dawn. This may involve the incorporation of a few characters, and additional lighting (stars, animals, etc…)
Entering my second week update: So far I have completed my blue screen and started working on the set design. I think I will focus on a combination of flat, cutout shapes placed over a plain to achieve a sense of depth, as well as textures for soils and foliage.
I have done some work in photoshop and color-scheme-designer to get a feel for how the final will look. I have also included some inspiration images from Bjork’s Wanderlust music video.
My next objective is to make the templates for the 2D cutouts of the mountainous landscape and other objects placed around in the environment. I will then begin to photograph and compose everything together to get close to a final product.
Figure as Landscape update:
My plan is to build an installation piece which will serve as the landscape. The figure will be present in the sky when the blue screen is against the model’s body. I’ve featured a rough sketch above, along with a few photos of my progress thus far.
My Figure as Landscape project will focus on the idea that a foreign entity (Mother Nature) controls the weather. I plan to incorporate set design where I will be in complete control of the environment and lighting.
Above I have posted a video from last semester, in which I used a constructed set.
I am working with producing a set of photos, rather than an entire video, I plan to use the next few weeks to construct a solid environment that will appeal to the flat plain of a still photograph.

For my example image of my own work, I chose an image I produced for a photo replication project from last semester. The image is a replication of Cecil Beaton’s “Nancy Beaton as a Shooting Star.”
I am Tyler Dunlavy and this will be my update blog in regards to Design for Media. My focus for this class will be in Photography.
I find myself to be more of a Doer than a Dreamer, though I land near the Dreamer line. I think logically and take on practical projects that I know are in my range of skill and artistic understanding. I enjoy dreaming up innovative ideas, but they are often impractical and sometime cliche, and immediately replaced with things I have a better handle on.
My goal for this class is to stay focused and concise, and see projects all the way through to the final. I feel that a weekly assessment will teach me to pay more attention to the little steps I take, which in turn will prove to better my organization and thought process of future projects.
